The Tall Ships will soon be arriving in Halifax Harbour and Alderney Landing in Dartmouth is once again playing host to tall ships and pirates.
The Pirates Landing Kids Zone will be open July 17 to 19 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Alderney Landing. Docked on this side of the harbour will be three ships: the Amistad (opening ceremony Friday, July 17), Peers Fancy, and a Kingston class naval vessel.
The Da PoPo theatre will offer musical entertainment for children and adults daily at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the Peace Pavilion.
The public is invited to attend a community pancake breakfast Sunday, July 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Alderney Landing. At about 10:15 a.m., 200 naval officers in period 18th century costumes will row across the harbour in 22 long row boats and join everyone for breakfast.
There will also be an aquaculture touch tank display, bounce pirate inflatables, treasure digs, face painting, pirate stories, crafts and tattoos.
During Tall Ships 2007, about 10,000 people came out to the Pirates Landing events, and according to Bea MacGregor of Alderney Landing, they hope to see 15,000 this year over the three days.
"In order for us to continue to produce these kinds of events, we really rely on the public to come out and support us," said MacGregor.
Tall Ships 2009 festivities begin on Thursday, July 16, with ships arriving between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. The event will wrap up with the parade of sail beginning at noon on Monday, July 20.
