It was just like old times when rocker Matt Mays held court at Lake Banook as part of the Canoe '09 festivities.
Spectators watched the concert from Silver's Hill, which was always the best seat in the house when Dartmouth hosted its own Natal Day events. And even more people crowded along Prince Albert Road, which was closed to vehicle traffic for the entire week.
"Eat your heart out Halifax," said Mike Gray, who has paddled at Lake Banook for more than 40 years. "Everyone always has a great time when someone is performing at Prince Albert Road. It is part of our history."
Gray said he hasn't missed many events at Lake Banook over the years and Canoe '09 was just one more way for people to catch up with one another and enjoy what Dartmouth has to offer. And that night it was Matt Mays.
"I would like to have seen even more people come out," he said. "Priorities should be about enjoying yourself here in the summer. And I am doing just that."
The free Matt Mays concert at Lake Banook was held as a way to thank the volunteers, participants and spectators of Canoe '09, the biggest sporting event ever held in Atlantic Canada.
"Music has always been a part of our culture," said Becky Maciorowski, who attended the concert along with her husband Mike. "I am proud of our Canadian team and I am proud of our local boy Matt Mays. It is a great combination and a wonderful night for a celebration."
Maciorowski, along with thousands of others, enjoyed a perfect night at the lake. Spectators raved all week about the weather.
"Wasn't it during the World's in 1997 that April Wine played?" said Paul Matthews. "I think we sat in the rain for that concert."
"The weather has been fantastic and has added to the fun, absolutely," said Joanne Johnsen, who was attending the concert with her husband and son. "Everyone is enjoying themselves."
Johnsen was taking a well deserved breather from her duties as a member of the operations and logistics committee for Canoe '09. She said it was also good for the athletes who were done racing to have some fun at the concert.
