'It's a different vibe here," said Edgewood Cafe and Bakery owner Cathy Goodin of her new shop in Millstone Square, Russell Lake.
Goodin opened the new bakery on Nov. 7, after closing her shop in Penhorn Mall just before Halloween last fall, and says she's pleased with how things are going so far.
"Everyone here is friendly and happy," said Goodin. "This location also gave us a lot more room. It's in a good new area and is close enough to our other location that some of our regulars could still come."
The bakery, which Goodin ran in Penhorn Mall for four and a half years, was one of the last businesses left operating at that mall when she closed.
Other stores, such as Tattletales Books, will be moving to a new strip mall sometime this spring.
Goodin said the location of her new shop on Baker Drive made it easy to get more involved in the local community.
"We've started a Chess Club on Wednesday nights where people can bring their own boards, or we have some available."
She said it's also a good space for people to host private parties, like baby showers or small weddings.
"I just love doing stuff like that; decorating, planning and baking for people."
Goodin, who graduated from the NSCC Akerley Campus Culinary Arts program in 1997, says her specialty is 'funky' cakes, wedding cakes in particular.
"I try to have something different every day," she said. Her bakery counter is filled with unique treats, such as the lady bug cupcake.
Goodin has a picture album with various works of cake art to show customers: a cake shaped like a purse, a Beatles cake, kids designs, and she said she even made one for an Olympic Games party when the torch went through the city in November. - Staff
