Since my last Political Speak column, the historic first legislative session for our NDP government wrapped up. It was a successful sitting that saw 30 bills passed.
I was particularly pleased to see the establishment of the Efficiency Nova Scotia Corporation. Climate change is the greatest threat to our environment. Conservation and renewable energy are two key steps for us to help in this global battle. Starting next spring, the corporation will make it easier for you to do your part with a fund for electricity efficiency programs, such as home audits and energy rebates. I am pleased that the group will also ensure that energy remains affordable
After such busy days and long hours in session, I'm happy to be back in the community.
November 10th was a big day at Seaside Elementary as they received a visit from Lieutenant Governor Mayann E. Francis. She was on hand to attend a special Remembrance Day event. I want to congratulate Seaside Elementary and the other schools who participated in this moving tribute to the brave men and women who risked their lives to defend of our freedom.
Recently I've participated in anti-bullying seminars in local elementary schools. Such events are all a part of keeping our communities safer. And as MLA for Cole-Harbour - Eastern Passage, crime prevention remains one of my top priorities. I will be attending two town hall meetings with local RCMP on Nov. 23 at 6:30 pm at the Lion's Club in Eastern Passage, and Nov. 26 at 7 pm at Cole Harbour Place. These are great opportunities for open dialogue, and a chance for communication and collaboration with you on this important topic.
With the NDP working hard to make life better for today's families, it's great to see support from the municipality as well. Working with Woodside/Eastern Passage Councillor Jackie Barkhouse on the redevelopment of Quiggly's Corner, I'm proud to see the new sign declaring the intersection "Quiggly's Corner" for the first time in print. It truly is the cornerstone of that community.
Although there was no grand ceremony for the redevelopment, I look forward to celebrating the change at the coming annual tree-lighting event on Nov. 29. As chair of the holiday festival committee, I look forward to speaking about the value of the area for our community and our identity. This will be the first time in 20 years without our big pine trees, which were removed because of disease, but we have a new tree to nurture. I look forward to seeing it grow just like our community.
It's great, as well, to be able to spend more time with my boys. They were getting a little tired of making themselves quick and easy dinners, and are all glad I'm back to make the odd supper. I'm looking forward to getting out to their basketball games and other events, and I hope to see you there too. If I don't see you at court side, feel free to contact me at 465-3180.
