'My public life is before you; and I know you will believe me when I say, that when I sit down in solitude to the labours of my profession, the only questions I ask myself are, What is right? What is just? What is for the public good?" - Joseph Howe

This quotation hung for many years on a billboard in downtown Halifax. It seems to me that these remain good questions for MLAs to ask themselves daily.
While the Auditor General's report covered only three weeks of my time as MLA, I want you to know that no expense I've claimed since becoming an MLA was named in the report. Nor have my expenses been of the type about which the AG has raised concerns.
One of the reasons I decided to seek public office was that I felt the previous government had failed in its duty to be a good steward of the resources given to it to safeguard. I was determined to do better.
I was shocked last fall to learn some former MLAs were selling their office furniture for their own profit. While this practice was allowed, it wasn't right, it wasn't just and it wasn't for the public good. It doesn't make economic sense to have every newly elected MLA buy an office full of brand new furniture and equipment. I've tried to equip my office frugally - buying used furniture and equipment when possible, and bringing other items from home. And when I retire, I will pass my furniture and equipment to the next MLA - just as our federal MPs do with theirs.
You should know that even before the AG released his report, the legislature took some steps toward accountability and expenditure reduction. These include eliminating the annual technology allowance, eliminating the $45,000 tax free severance, reducing constituency office budgets for the remainder of fiscal '09 and freezing MLA salaries. A review of the entire expense system is underway and I welcome more changes.
I'm sorry this report has given you reason to lose faith in your provincial politicians. But I want you to know that I will work with you and with my colleagues to address the concerns raised by the Auditor General in his report, and to restore trust in your provincial legislators.
Finally, I want to remind you of the next consultations for the proposed cultural arts centre for the new Bedford High School on Thursday March 4 at the Bedford Legion, and Monday March 8 at the LWF Community in Fall River starting at 7 p.m.
As always, for assistance, please contact my office at kelly@kellyregan.ca or 407-3777.

My public life is before you; and I know you will believe me when I say, that when I sit down in solitude to the labours of my profession, the only questions I ask myself are, What is right? What is just? What is for the public good? Joseph Howe.

Politicans of today could not hold a candle to Joseph Howe. Howe also said that political parties would in time be the down fall of government.

I look at the political parties as nothing more than vehicles used to hijack, what should be the people's government. These political parties in my opinion are off shutes of someting that compares to the mafia.

When government and those we elect , ignor us, abuses us , then Ms Regan why should I be so crazy to vote for such an abusive system?

There are quite a few families where husband and wife are both in politics, and this in my opinion is not healthly for the country or a province.

Politicians telling us that people must have faith in their elected officials. You have that backwards, the elected officials must earn that trust since they have destroyed it. Your party in particular.
Liberal Premier John Savage stood in the legislature and lied to every taxpayer in Nova
Scotia and to those in Halifax county in particular when he told us amalgamation would be cheaper. I doubt if even he believed it. Logic would say no. Dartmouth always paid less to their police and firemen. Now they would all be getting the same money. Dartmouth always plowed the sidewalks, there was no way they would give that up so now the city has to plow all sidewalks. The province looked after and paid for much of the road system in the county now the Liberals downloaded it onto the ratepayers.
It was a matter of the Liberals in Ottawa downloading onto the provinces and Premier Savage, good Liberal that he was, said nothing and promptly dumped the costs onto the landowners. Also he was told that there were studies (its in Hansard) from Toronto, where this was already tried and had shown to be an economic disaster.
Finally the GST. Again the Liberals in Ottawa started it and three provinces (all with Liberal governments by strange coincidence) signed on. The first year the new tax took $1.8 billion out of the pockets of the people in those provinces ($600,000,000 in Nova Scotia) and you say we should have faith in you?
Next the Conservatives. Hamm spent his short time as Premier creating new user fees and jacking those already there sky high.
Rodney? What can I say that his actions havent already said?
Now for the NDP (New Deficit party). They take the gold medal in hypocrisy hands down. They defeated the Conservatives because the PC were going to change the law on deficits and use the money set aside for the debt in general funding. The NDP said no and put us through the cost of yet another election. Shortly after they were in power they did exactly what they defeated the PCs for attempting. Their excuse (from one long time NDPer), it had to be dome. If it had to be done why didnt they let the PCs do it and save the cost of the election? Why? Easy! Polls showed they could possibly gain power and belly up to the trough which they did in fine style.
In fact it turns out that the NDP sanctimoniously condemning the other parties from the position of third party and opposition had their snouts into the trough just as deeply as the rest. Now that they are caught.well look after it. Well have the speaker investigate the speakers office and an Ex MLA look into the rest and WE will decide if police action is warranted. How many ways can you spell conflict if interest? No matter how many there wouldnt be enough to cover what is going on in the Legislature right now.
Lastly no party, no member regardless of how clean their hands are, are speaking up for a proper complete RCMP investigation. Have faith in our elected officials? Thats a laugh. I doubt if its even possible for this bunch to even begin to rebuild and public trust.
I would be surprised if anyone in the house is returned if fact, if any riding returned any of the present members I would suggest that the drinking water in that riding be checked for mercury contamination. Go to my petition page and read the dome of the hundreds of comments put there by the public .It will amaze you how out of touch with them you must be to think that enough of them have any kind of faith in the government left.

Spare me the histrionics Kelly Regan.
It's easy to be magnaninmous when you live where you do on the Arm ... and don't need to worry where your next meal might come from.

Let's see, Geoff is hauling down well over 150,000 and you must be close to at least 100,000 yourself. The average Nova Scotian family income is around 35,000.

Ahhh yes, life is good ... for some.
Why is it that only our betters are given the reigns of power? Could it be that (all) parties are heavily populated with them?
    Altruists all.
The average working stiff cannot afford the time off work to campaign ... nor would any of those with the big money offer to support them. I can't recall any Horatio Alger stories, politically speaking, in this province.

So, let us all eat cake together and exude great love for our much maligned politicians who have put us where we are today in Nova Scotia.
