Canadians often contribute to the better well-being of other people in the world. This was the case with fair trade coffee, where sales have increased by 30 per cent each year in Canada. This could also become the case with some other consumer goods, such as chocolate.
The purchase of fair trade certified products has important consequences. It allows many producers to receive reasonable prices for their products and numerous workers to climb out of poverty.
We believe that about 15,000 slave children are working on farms and cocoa plantations in the Ivory Coast, and this is only a small sample of all the misery linked to the production of chocolate.
We should all work toward a world where solidarity is at the heart of economic development. A fair trade Easter is an immense step in this direction.
