To the editor,
Your piece by Mayor Peter Kelly (written by his
spin doctor Peter Duffy) is the best example of
what is wrong with public poles I've seen in
years. In it Mayor Kelly says, "we are encouraged
to learn that, generally, council's priorities
match your own, namely: transit and transportation;
public safety; infrastructure; smart
and sustainable development; and improved
communications."
Smart and sustainable development here Mayor
Kelly means, it seems, anything the downtown
crowd want and it can be sustained via
our tax dollars. The convention center and new
$55-million-plus library fit these spots. He goes
on to congratulate the police chief on the great
job he's done. I got to this just after reading the
daily tally of assaults and drive by shootings.
Finally in closing he says, "Many of you feel your
voices are not heard or reflected in council's
decision making; so obviously, this is an area
where we must renew our efforts to reach out
to you." Try opening the doors of council for a
start. Record and publish all votes. We all saw
how interested city hall is in our opinions with
the Commonwealth Games.
As long as we agree or they can buy ambiguously-
worded poll results making it appear we
agree they are happy and the spending continues.
I wonder in what poll the public called for a $30
million dollar shortfall this year? You have to
wonder if these people are in touch with reality
at all.
