This time of the year we have the opportunity to combine convenient gift-buying with promoting the causes of community action. Everyday, I am inspired and humbled by the work of our community-based organizations. Their volunteers and staff bring much-needed programs and services that enrich our lives.
These organizations need our ongoing support all year long, but particularly this time of year. Community groups are sponsoring product sales, auctions, draws, pantry and craft sales, and other fundraising activities. Quality, locally-produced products showcase the talents and skills of our community members.
Two of the groups that I work with - the Dartmouth Heritage Museum Society and the Dartmouth Historical Association - are offering quality products that make wonderful birthday, Christmas or recognition gifts. The Museum is selling 2009 calendars with 12 historic views of the metro area from photos by George Craig (1854-1923) for $10 each at Evergreen House, 26 Newcastle St. Unique photos include the early Halifax market, Dartmouth waterfront and lakes, Halifax waterfront, Lawrencetown Beach, St Peter's Churches, Eastern Passage, etc. For those interested in viewing more of Craig's collection, you should visit the current Craig exhibit at Evergreen House.
Another gift option is the recently-launched 14th publication of the Dartmouth Historical Association. Stories from Nova Scotia's Past is available for $20 from Evergreen House and other area outlets. This collection of stories was written by Harry Chapman, and includes stories on a broad range of places, people and events.
I encourage you to support local community groups as you consider your gift-buying lists. You will be giving twice!
