Political Speak - The Conservative government decision to remove the eight per cent HST rebate on electricity was wrong. That's what a growing number of Nova Scotians are saying, and 10,000 Nova Scotians can't be wrong!

Last week, we introduced a private member's bill that would provide the eight per cent rebate on electricity to Nova Scotians, regardless of the amount of electricity used.

This bill is backed up by a petition with more than 10,000 Nova Scotian signatures calling on the Conservative government to reinstate the HST rebate on electricity.

Currently, the Household Energy Rebate Program only provides a rebate on electricity for use in excess of 27.4 kilowatt hours per day.

The pain of the Conservative carbon tax is compounded by the fact that Nova Scotia Power recently had their request for a 9.3 per cent rate increase approved by the Utility and Review Board. This is too much for Nova Scotia families who already face an uphill struggle to manage everyday financial concerns.

Since the start of this legislative session, we have been calling on the government to provide Nova Scotians with an economic update.

The world financial crisis has many concerned, and the premier owes it to Nova Scotians to be open and honest with the state of the province's economics.
