Emergency departments serve a vital purpose in communities across Nova Scotia. Residents in each and every community in this province rely on their local emergency department for one reason or another. Whether it be an emergency situation, blood testing, or that the local ER is the only avenue to see a physician, emergency departments must be there when needed. More importantly, ERs have to be open and sufficiently staffed when Nova Scotians are in need.
For more than a decade, Nova Scotia Conservatives have been allowing the instability in Nova Scotia emergency rooms to continue. Nova Scotians are trying to tell this government what services are needed, but they aren't listening. If health care in Nova Scotia is going to improve it is going to take leadership from the top. There is only so much blood, sweat and tears our health care workers can sacrifice.
The minister of health needs to create a strategy to recruit and retain health-care professionals. Communities, including those that make up the HRM, need ERs that are open reliably so that when they have an emergency they do not have to consult a closure schedule.
Health-care workers need to know that if they come to Nova Scotia they will have a healthy work life and will be working in an environment that is not constantly short staffed or closed. It is time for the Conservative government to improve the quality of life for doctors and health care professionals so they will come and stay in Nova Scotia, and ultimately close the gaps in service in emergency departments across the province.
Emergency rooms are a staple of our health care system. When you or someone you care about is in a health crisis, you want to be able to access treatment as quickly and as close to home as possible.
Communities across the province have united to ensure they maintain a certain level of health care service. Health care in Nova Scotia is second to none, and it is this way because of community leadership.
The Conservative government has to stop being a barrier in the delivery of health care services, and start showing leadership by working with communities to ensure they have the public health care they deserve, and expect, in a timely fashion.
Finally, as we enter into the holiday season, I would like to wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday season. If possible, please take the opportunity to help out those in need in our community. Even the smallest action can have a large impact. If you would like to speak to me, or make a time to come in and talk, please call me at 461-0181.
