HRM Animal Services encourages pet owners to take advantage of the Responsible Pet Ownership $10 licence promotion.

HRM By-Law A-300 requires all dogs and grandfathered prohibited animals to be licensed annually. Until May 31, owners may purchase a pet licence for a special $10 rate. After May 31, the regular rates are $50 for an unaltered dog, $15 for a spayed/neutered dog and $50 for a grandfathered prohibited animal.

The bylaw prohibits individuals from keeping the following animals as pets:

- all venomous snakes, reptiles, insects and arachnids

- these seven species of the Boid Family:

Green anaconda, Burmese python,Yellow anaconda Indian python, Reticulated python Amethyst python, African rock python

- any adult snake exceeding 3.3 metres in length (measured from snout to the tip of the tail)

- any adult lizard exceeding two metres (measured from snout to the tip of the tail)

For an individual to keep a prohibited animal obtained before April 1, the owner must microchip and licence the prohibited animal by June 30.

Failure to comply with the licensing provisions may result in a $222 summary offence ticket or prosecution in a court of law. - Submitted
