BEDFORD
By Yvette d'Entremont - The Weekly News
A vehicle carting anxiously anticipated cargo arrived in Bedford last week.
Volunteers with the Rocky Lake Development Association and a handful of children and community members were on hand for the March 27 delivery of the dome designed to sit atop the Gary Martin Rink at the Rocky Lake Common site.
"It's a fantastic day for us. It marks another major milestone in bringing recreation to the kids in Bedford," said committee co-chairman Steve Warburton.
"Our intention is that this will be ready in time for the next hockey season."
The volunteer group was dealt a disappointing blow in January when HRM selected a site on the Hammonds Plains Road for a new quad-pad arena instead of the Rocky Lake site.
Board members vowed to continue with the Rocky Lake project. The vision for the site includes a triplex ice surface, soccer field and gymnasium. The board's commitment is to offer facilities that will serve not only Bedford, but the surrounding communities of Fall River, Sackville and Waverley.
Warburton said the dome will now be prepped for inflation. Depending on weather conditions, it's expected to be up and fully inflated by the end of this week or early next week.
A community celebration is set to take place at the site on April 8 at 3:45 p.m. Members of the public are encouraged to attend. The dome rink is located on a site between the Wal-Mart and C.P. Allen High School.
