Geeks versus Nerds is an ongoing comedy/debate show between ardent fans of science fiction and fantasy. But now audience members have a chance to show them who's boss with a new show - Knock out the Knerd.
"The idea essentially came from people who came up to PigMonkey (one of the nerds and founders of the show) and said 'you know what, I bet I could do a better job onstage,'" John Roy who is the project manager for Geeks versus Nerds and now Knock out the Knerd. "This is our way of saying, OK come on up and show us how you would do it."
But how does it work? People in the audience write down their preferred topics such as 'Spider-Man' or 'Super Mario Bros.' If they're selected to go onstage and represent their particular category they'll be debating against a group of three veteran nerds from the Geeks versus Nerds shows who will defend their own category. The chaos and laughs that ensue is where the fun begins.
Their first Knock out the Knerd show was on July 31, with approximately 50 people in attendance. Organizers say it won't be the last.
"It was very successful, everybody had a lot of fun," one of the hosts known as PigMonkey said. "It's not meant to be easy for the geeks on the stage, and when people come up they realize it isn't."
One of the contestants who learned just that was Chris Muise, who's been to many of the Geeks Versus Nerds shows and wanted to test his might against the nerds.
He had to defend why ReBoot had more viruses (and is generally more dangerous) than The Matrix. The judge ended up siding with The Matrix (the nerds).
"You can feel the pressure when you go up against these guys," Muise said. "Anyone who's been to a Geek Versus Nerds show knows these guys know their stuff."
