The 16 year old arrested on a weapons count Friday night at Mic Mac Mall in Dartmouth was carrying a loaded sawed off .22 rifle according to the latest from police. The kid was also on probation for robbery. The teen was arrested after someone in the mall on a busy shopping night overhead two young men talking about drugs and a firearm and called police. The youth now faces 6 weapons counts including carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a prohibited weapon. You have to wonder what a 16 year old was doing with a loaded sawed off rifle on a night when the mall was packed with shoppers. Scary to think about the possibilities.
This new year didn't start off with a shooting like 2012 did, but there was a gun incident in the early morning hours of January 1st. A man flashed what looked like a handgun on a Metro Transit bus during an argument with a group of teenage girls. The man's accused of pulling out the gun and pointing it at two of the teens. He and another woman then left the bus but not before she punched one of the girls in the face. The two were long gone by the time police arrived.
I'm not sure I like those new polymer bills the Bank of Canada's now printing out to combat counterfeits. The bills stick together for one thing and they just don't feel right. Apparently there's also a concern with melting. Canadian Press is reporting allegations some new bills actually melted in the hot summer sun. One report says several bills melted together after being left inside a car on a hot day last summer. The Bank of Canada disputes the suggestions but says disclosing details could actually endanger national security. National security? Really?
And speaking of money, in just over a month the penny will be no more. February 4th is the date the penny will stop being used as a currency. The feds killed the one cent piece saying it cost 1.6 cents to make each penny. Dropping it they say will save us $11 million a year. So come February 4th items that cost $1.01 or $1.02 will be rounded down to $1.00 while items costing $1.03 or $1.04 will be rounded up to $1.05. Time to start rolling all those pennies stored away in jars.
Have a great day. Get involved. And if you're not outraged, you're not paying attention.
