BEDFORD - A group of students from Charles P. Allen High School who have raised $11,000 over two years for the construction of a school in the island of LaGonave, Haiti, are asking for the community's help.
The island is a short distance from Port-au-Prince. Following the Jan. 12 earthquake and its devastation of the capital city, many people are fleeing to LaGonave's small hospital for medical treatment.
CPA high school principal Jeff Lewis and his wife Valerie (a family physician) worked in Haiti from 1988 to 1991.
"At that time, Haiti was a difficult place to provide medical care due to geography and limited human and material resources. Today, the situation is beyond desperate," Lewis wrote.
"The hospital has been flooded with wounded from Port-au-Prince and is in need of any help that can be sent their way."
Through their contacts at the hospital, Valerie is helping organize a commercial container shipment of medical supplies. A team of medical professionals will accompany the container in the next week.
Anyone in a position to donate any of the following medical supplies, in any amount, is encouraged to drop them off at Charles P. Allen High School or at the Geriatrics in Motion Clinic, 65 Prestwick Close, Suite 100, Halifax (Clayton Park) in care of Valerie Lewis.
