On Aug. 21 Weir Rockin’ 2010 is set to rock Weir Field with a line up of acts bigger and better than ever.
The field is ready, the bands are ready and the fans are ready to party at the annual concert which has turned into the must-see music event of the summer. Organizers are expecting an estimated 2,500 people in attendance. HRM Coun. Brad Johns has been on the organizing committee since the beginning. He isn’t surprised by the buzz.
“We’re growing every year,” he said. “We’ve never committed to having tickets at the door and last year we had to turn people away. This year, based on our numbers, we’re expecting to sell-out again.”
Johns wants people to know that this event could not take place without the hundreds of volunteers involved in making this event take place.
“I can’t say enough about our volunteers and how instrumental they are in the entire process,” he said. “From show organizers to on-site security, without them and the support of the community it just wouldn’t happen.”
This year’s concert is being dedicated to volunteer Gerald Graves who was a founding member of SLRA and who worked tirelessly on this project.
Weir Rockin’ is run by a non-profit, volunteer-based community group, formed in conjunction with the Springfield Lake Recreation Association (SLRA) in Middle Sackville.
Formed in 2006, the committee is made up of staff and board members of the SLRA, as well as several volunteers with specialized backgrounds lending their expertise to various aspects of the event. Everyone involved was keen, and after a feasibility study showed that the community would support the idea, organizers decided to go for it.
The goal of Weir Rockin’ is to be a self-sustaining event. Any profit generated from the show is put back into the planning and organizing of future shows and as profits continue to grow so will the calibre of talent.
For the inaugural concert April Wine was chosen as the headlining act. It turned out to be an excellent choice. The classic Canadian band was a hit and concert goers were hooked. Chilliwack and Haywire hit the stage in 2008 and in 2009 Trooper fans were treated to another rockin’ show. This year Loverboy, another Canadian favourite, is sure to have the crowds singing and swaying to its set list of huge original tunes from the same classic rock decade.
Loverboy accumulated numerous hit songs in Canada and in the United States throughout the 80’s, earning multi-platinum albums and selling millions of records. The band’s hit singles, including ‘Turn Me Loose’ and ‘Working for the Weekend’, have become arena rock staples and are still heard on stations throughout North America.
Weir Rockin’ is the band’s only Atlantic Canada stop on this tour. The Lounge Flys and Dwight Deon will be the opening act. Free Drink Responsibly Shuttle Service has been expanded to include Mt. Uniacke. Tickets can be purchased at www.ticketatlantic.com.
Tickets are on sale now and will not be available at the door. Visit www.WeirRockin.com for more information.
