My first day back on the town and I get to hang out with 3,000 rockin' Loverboy fans at Weir Field - that's right WEIR Field, not Met Field as I mistakenly told you last week. Unfortunately I was a little late for the show so by the time I got there the party was well under way. People were singing and jumping and having a crazy time. Sackville resident Janet Leger was one of them.
"I'm a huge fan, I've been listening to Loverboy on my MP3 player and my Facebook page says "Raise a Little Hell, oh scratch that, it's time for the kid to get hot tonight," she laughed.
Everyone I spoke with talked about community and friends and how great it was to have this type of event so close to home. Many people said Weir Rockin' concerts give them a chance to see people they haven't seen it years, and that it's like a high school reunion.
All comments were positive except for one lady, who suggested pink and blue porta-potties, I like that idea. Sorry guys, but you tend to be a little messier in the potty department.
I ran into MLA Dave Wilson who was looking cool, but regrettably had not worn his red leather pants.
"I just didn't think it would be a good look," he said. "Besides I was just 13 years old when Loverboy was big."
I kicked him and left.
Apparently lead singer Mike Reno couldn't find his leather pants either, but he did have a head band. I didn't wear big plastic earrings with shoes to match, but I did wear my hair bigger than usual.
I was standing in the middle of the crowd when the band started playing The Kid is Hot Tonight. People went wild. Girls jumped on their boyfriends' shoulders, people my age were singing along, the younger ones pretended to sing along and then This Could be the Night started, and couples starting slow dancing like they were in high school. I was a wallflower, but I swayed.
By the time I left, security guards were taking care of a few stumblers but said everything was cool.
People came from all over HRM, the Annapolis Valley and even Truro just to see the show. Organizers couldn't be more proud.
Speaking for the organizing committee, Upper Sackville Coun. Brad Johns said it was another successful year for the show and for the community, and he gave me this little tidbit.
"Although we can't say anything right now, the committee has already started discussing next year's concert, which will be our fifth anniversary, and we promise it's going to be something extra special," he said.
Ideas for next year? Facebook Weir Rockin' and let them know what you're thinking. As for me I'll be running around the track eating celery so I can fit into those leather pants or maybe I'll suggest they get MC Hammer. I won't have to work at all to get into those big Hammer pants.
