“Hello Sailor!” Exhibit: Historic Splash at the Maritime Museum

Remember when the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic made waves with its captivating “Hello Sailor! Gay Life on the Ocean Wave” exhibit? It was an eye-opener, focusing on the LGBTQ community’s experiences and contributions to the maritime world from the 1950s right up to recent times. That unforgettable launch on May 19th surely was a highlight of the year!

A Tale from Across the Pond

Before reaching our shores, “Hello Sailor!” began its journey at the Merseyside Maritime Museum in Liverpool, an initiative by the National Museums Liverpool. Taking cues from the engrossing book “Hello Sailor! The Hidden History of Gay Life at Sea” by Jo Stanley and Paul Baker from 2003, the exhibit’s authenticity was unmistakable.

Adding a Local Touch

To add that special Nova Scotian and Canadian essence, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic had liaised with local LGBTI stalwarts. Five courageous gay mariners, sharing their personal tales, photographs, and maritime mementos, truly brought the exhibit to life. Their narratives added depth and a personal touch to the already rich tapestry of stories.

Why It Matters

David Wilson, the head honcho of Communities, Culture, and Heritage, had aptly remarked, “This was a monumental stride for the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. It’s these unique historical tales we aim to bring to the fore.” His words resonated with many who attended, realizing the importance of inclusivity in our shared maritime history.

Thanks to collaborations with the Merseyside Maritime Museum and local LGBTI leaders, the exhibit was universally accessible. Calum Ewing, the man steering the museum operations, had acknowledged this synergy saying, “With combined insights, we crafted an exhibit that truly spoke to everyone.”

Special Guest Alert!

It was a pleasant surprise when Ms. Stanley, the exhibit’s guest curator, travelled all the way from Halifax, England, to be a part of the proceedings. Her presence undoubtedly added a touch of elegance and authenticity to the event.

The exhibit, which ran till November 27th, garnered widespread acclaim. Reflecting on the event, it was more than just an exhibit. “Hello Sailor!” served as a poignant reminder of the diverse tales that shape our maritime history. It was a journey that many will cherish for years to come.
