Supportive Housing for Young Mothers (SHYM), an innovative housing complex, opened Oct. 1 in Dartmouth.
Here, single moms aged 16 to 21 with new babies live independently in their own apartment units. But they also get the help they need - programs on parenting, child development, life skills, healthy eating, household management, education and career prospects. They can stay for up to two years.
The facility, a former school near the Dartmouth General Hospital, has been in the works for about six years. It's the first of its kind in Nova Scotia, but modelled on successful programs elsewhere in Canada. With a price tag of about $1.3 million - including cash from all three levels of government - SHYM has 12 family units and two for live-in staff.
