RCMP Halifax District and Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources are receiving increase calls on bear sights. Yesterday RCMP responded to three sightings of bears in the Tantallon area on Blue Forest Lane, Thyme Lane and Royal Oaks Cres.
With the warmer weather here, it is the perfect time for citizens to
become Bear Wise. You can remove many things that attract black bears
around your house. Store garbage in waste containers with tight-fitting
lids and only put garbage out on the morning of pick-up. Remove bird
feeders and only use them during the winter months, black bears are
attracted to foods like seed, suet and nectar used to feed birds. Clean
outdoor grills after each use, including the grease trap underneath.
Reduce garbage odors by rinsing food cans before putting them in
recycling containers. Keep pet food inside or don*t feed in the
evening.
If a bear found food such as bird feed or garbage one or more times, it
will return. When food is no longer available, the visits will stop.
Report bear sights to Department of Natural Resources at 902-861-2560 or
after hours toll free 1-800-565-2224.
