For a regular crew of patrons, quiz night at Finbars has brought them closer together. On Aug. 1, they won their fourth quiz night championship.
"This is like our Cheers," said Tina Flindall, one of the six members of the Kenneth Lazers. "When we come here everybody knows us and it's a way for the six of us to connect with each other every week."
The Kenneth Lazers started going to quiz night regulary two years ago and it quickly became a weekly tradition.
Michael Casey, owner and occasional quiz master at Finbars, said there is a method to how the questions are made.
"I use a stream of consciousness method, I pick a subject, start googling it." Casey said. "Tonight (Aug. 1) was the nations of the Olympics so I looked up all of the flags and whatever the name reminded me of and tried to pick a question that suits one of the categories."
Casey said that they have a template for quiz night, which is used to even the playing field. Essentially making sure that all questions won't be from one category like sports or music.
"Obviously not all questions were Olympic related, but they may have been inspired by it, like the Newfoundland ferry question came from watching Argentina, because one of the ports is Argentia."
Instant prizes are given away every quiz night, but those who are in it for the long haul compete for larger prizes at the end of the season.
"It's a U.K. pub tradition, quiz night out there is very common and I try to bring a little bit of authenticity to our little spot here, and being a trivia guy myself personally I thought it would be fun. It wasn't until six months after we started it when it took off, but once it did it's been really popular."
