Jon Mullane has been making music for years, and his latest album ‘Shine,' which was released on Feb. 12, already has a song on Billboard's Top 40.
The single, ‘My New American Girl,' is a fun pop/rock track that is easy to listen too. Mullane said he didn't want to give away his personal reasons behind the lyrics, because he wants people to infer their own meaning to it.
"The song doesn't just mean one thing," Mullane said. "It may be about a girl or something else, but one thing my co-writer and I did want to get across when I had the title in mind and started working on it was to have just a real fun, happy song that would have a classic vibe to it."
Mullane said the title of the album ‘Shine' is a reference to where he sees himself now, after years of working on his craft.
"I guess in a sense, it's an achievement of being the third album for me and kind of a culmination of the last five years of a re-building of myself," he said. "About five years ago I set the goal for myself of getting better at what I do, at singing, performing and song-writing and I just really worked hard at that. The suggests that I feel that I'm starting to shine myself."
After a year in the recording studio, Mullane said he's proud of the final product and hopes to start touring soon.
He'll be playing during the East Coast Music Awards in March along with another show at The Argyle the same month. Tour information can be found at jonmullane.com
Mullane got his start in the recording studio shortly after finishing school at St. Mary's University. He said a lot has changed since then.
"It's a totally different feeling being in the studio now, then when I was a kid," he said. "I was going into studios wide-eyed and not really knowing what I was doing, it was exciting.
"Now I feel that there's a comfort level I have when recording, I know my voice much better, I know where to push my voice."
With the decline of the traditional album and emphasis on single downloads through digital marketplaces like iTunes, Mullane admits that the industry is changing, putting more emphasis on releasing singles. He said it won't change his love for making music.
"This is what I've been doing for a long time, so of course I'll continue doing this, it's me," he said. "Trying to live in the moment and enjoy the experience by making the most of it and see what happens. You can never tell where the music will take you."
