Man found unresponsive in police custody dies

A man who was found unresponsive in police cells early Wednesday morning and taken to hospital has passed away.

Forty-seven-year-old George Joseph Richards of Dartmouth was found unresponsive in a cell at Police Headquarters at 2:35 a.m. on Wednesday morning. He was taken to hospital where he passed away this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.

To ensure a full and independent review of this incident, Cape Breton Regional Police have been asked to investigate this matter. Halifax Regional Police will continue to speak to all questions concerning this case.
