HRM’s Emergency Management Office (EMO) emergency operations centre is now up and running, as of 7 a.m. this morning.
The local emergency response group - which includes key personnel from Fire and Emergency, Regional Police, RCMP, Metro Transit, HRM transportation and Public Works, and Halifax Water, along with representatives from EMO Nova Scotia, Public Safety Canada, NS Department of Community Services, Nova Scotia Power, EHS, the Red Cross, and others - are working together, assessing the situation and giving regular briefings. All related organizational Emergency Operations Centres (EOC’s) are staffed and ready to respond, if and when necessary.
As of 8 a.m this morning, the Canadian Hurricane Centre reports that Hurricane Earl is still classified as a category 1 hurricane. Impacts from the hurricane will be felt throughout the morning and into the afternoon.
Members of the public are reminded that all HRM wooded parks and sports fields will be closed until further notice. The public is also advised to avoid coastal areas as the weather intensifies.
