A provincewide ban on all open fires begins today, July 12.

"The dry and warm weather we are experiencing has brought the fire weather index to high or extreme throughout the province," said Jim Rudderham, supervisor of wildfire management with the Department of Natural Resources. "A ban on open fires will reduce the risk of wildfires and potential damage to homes and properties."

The open-fire ban will continue until further notice. Significant rainfall will be required before the ban can be lifted.

The ban prohibits open fires within 305 metres (1,000 feet) of wooded areas, including in devices such as chimeneas. Municipalities may have additional restriction on open fires.
