The public is invited to attend the official opening of the new Preston Unit Office for Halifax District RCMP at 2:00 p.m. Sept. 5 at the North Preston Community Centre, 44 Simmonds Road.

The permanent office will provide expanded police services for people living in the communities of North Preston, East Preston, Cherry Brook, and Lake Loon.

People will no longer have to leave the area to file accident reports, request criminal background checks, or access RCMP front-counter services. The new office will also provide a permanent base of operations for the RCMP Preston Unit.

Police will start and end their shifts there, file reports, and carry on many of their operational duties.

"This is a significant achievement for people living in the area and for the RCMP," said Cpl. Calvin Byard, officer in charge of the Preston Unit. "We have seen participation in RCMP programs and services increase significantly in these communities over the past few years. This new office will allow us to strengthen those ties."

The new office will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The main office phone line is (902)426-1607.
