The province is improving access for persons with disabilities with investments in 14 community facilities and venues.

The Community ACCESS-ability Program is providing almost $100,000 for accessibility-related capital improvements such as  renovations, installations and equipment.

"This program helps non-profit community organizations and groups make their facilities more accessible," said John MacDonell, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. "By removing barriers and making public spaces and buildings more accessible, government is helping to make life better for Nova Scotians with disabilities."

Through this program, government provides municipalities and community organizations with grants for up to two thirds of the cost of renovations and equipment, to a maximum of $10,000. The applicant covers the other third of cost.

"Improving a community playground to make it accessible to disabled children is a huge undertaking," said Peter Jeffery, president, Enfield/Elmsdale District Lion's Club. "We're deeply grateful for this funding and excited to build a playground where all our children can have fun."

A list of approved projects can be found at www.gov.ns.ca/snsmr/muns/infr/access/access.asp .
