In their continued effort to address road safety and educate citizens on the rules of the road, the HRP/RCMP Integrated Traffic Unit is focusing on school bus safety during the month of October.
Police are reminding motorists that it is illegal to pass a school bus from either direction when their red lights are flashing regardless of the number of lanes of traffic. The initial fine for this offence is $399.91 and six points on your driver’s license.
Passing a school bus with its amber lights flashing without caution could also result in a $284.91 fine.
Police will be stepping up enforcement in relation to these complaints and motorists are asked to do their part by obeying these laws. This will help ensure it is safe for children going to and coming from school.
Anyone who witnesses an infraction is encouraged to report it to police at 490-5016.
The traffic safety theme in September focused on monitoring speed in school zones and crosswalk safety. During the month, a total of 1,017 Summary Offence Tickets were issued for a variety of offences.
