The first of two buildings that will make up a high-end apartment complex in Lower Sackville is now officially under construction.

The four-storey, 54-unit building will be located across from Payzant Home Hardware on Sackville Drive, making it the first strictly residential multiple dwelling unit located on the business strip.

Sackville Business Association director Michelle Champniss said Whimsical Lake Developments Ltd., the company behind the project, should be commended for going the extra mile to make this an attractive high quality development.

"We're very pleased to see more residential density in the heart of the Sackville business district," she said.

The complex will be comprised of two buildings with a mixture of one and two bedroom units. It will contain above ground and underground parking and will be constructed of a combination of masonry veneer and pre-finished lap siding.

Sackville Coun. Steve Craig said in the past emptynesters that wanted to move on from properties that they had either built or purchased for their families had limited choices to move on after their children moved out.

"Perhaps they couldn't maintain the properties as easily as they used to or they simply didn't wish to," he said. "A number of people have mentioned they have had to move out of the community."

With new buildings on Cobequid Road, Walker Avenue and now this new building, there will be more options.

"I absolutely think it's a positive thing for people to be able to pick and choose what type of dwelling they want to live in - in the community they have come to love and enjoy."

Construction on a second 72-unit building will begin within a year after completion of the first.
