The Nova Scotia RCMP is warning the public about fraud artists using the RCMP logo in an effort to scam money.
RCMP in Pictou County have received complaints that an email message is circulating that appears to be authored and circulated by the RCMP. The email provides a link that leads to an official-looking website and asks the recipient to pay money. This is a scam and any personal information provided to this site goes directly to scam artists.
In several instances, the message suggests to the email recipient that it has detected they had downloaded music and movies illegally and that they were being fined for their activity. The fine amount is $100 plus taxes and it has to be paid through U-Cash and the recipients are provided a PIN number to be used for the transaction.
In some instances, the recipient's computer froze and could no longer be used. The message then stated that if the fine was paid the computer would be made operable within one to 72 hours after payment is received.
This is not a legitimate email and the RCMP does not communicate with the public about fines or police matters in this way. If you receive this email, delete it immediately, police say.
