The contenders for HRM’s top job will be thrust into the spotlight tonight, Sept. 13, for the first of several debates scheduled between now and election day.

Fusion Halifax will put candidates Fred Connors, Tom Martin and Mike Savage on the spot in a job interview-style question period at Pier 21, said Fusion chair Natasha Gibb.

“Just like an executive recruiter, we’ll look at education, work experience, skills and strengths in a job interview format,” said Gibb in an email Wednesday. “We’ll dig into the qualities each candidate brings to the table to help… determine who’s best able to fulfill the requirements of the position for the next four years.”

Gibb said Fusion would reach out to newcomers Aaron Eisses, Steve Mackie and Robert (Wesley) McCormack.

“(We’ll) do our best to accommodate them in our event,” said Gibb.

But Mackie, a local comedian, said he’s decided not to participate in the event because it is produced by a “private citizen’s group.”

“I’m promoting open-source accountability. I thought about (participating), but it’s kind of going against what I’m saying,” said Mackie on Wednesday. “So, I’m going to play it safe and just bow out of that one.”

Other debates on the horizon are on Sept. 17 at Christ Church Upper Hall in Dartmouth and at the Lord Nelson hotel on Sept. 19, hosted by Our HRM Alliance and the Downtown Halifax Business Commission. — Metro Halifax
