At 7:35 PM on Tuesday August 31, the Colchester District RCMP and Emergency Medical Services responded a single vehicle crash on West Bound Lane of Highway 104 just before the Debert off ramp, Debert, N.S.
The vehicle a 1997 Blue chevy cavalier was traveling west bound on the 104 when it went out of control fishtailing into the median and rolling several times.
The two passengers in the back seat, a 20-year-old female, Amy Elizabeth Osmond, from Prospect Bay in Halifax County and a 21 year old male from Halifax were thrown from the vehicle. They were transported to Colchester Hospital then later to the QEII Hospital where Osmond died as result of head and chest injuries. The driver and front passenger were wearing their seat belts, remained in the vehicle and received only minor injuries.
Road conditions at the time were clear and the RCMP believe driver inexperience was a contributing factor to the crash, as the driver of the vehicle had just obtained her drivers licence earlier Tuesday.
Preliminary investigation revealed the driver hit the rumble strip in the right side of the road and over-steered causing the vehicle to spin out of control into the ditch.
