MONTREAL - One Quebec student group says that with tuition hikes officially off the table, it will champion the idea of free education.

Now that the new Parti Quebecois government has scrapped a controversial increase in post-secondary tuition fees, a group is proposing free education altogether as a long-term goal.

The hardline student group CLASSE says free education is entirely achievable — a position that isn't promoted by the province's two other groups.

With the proposed hike by the former Liberal government cancelled, Quebec has the lowest tuition the country.

The new PQ government has said it favours indexing tuition to inflation.

Several hundred people took part in a rally and march today in Montreal - a regular occurrence on the 22nd of each month for the past several months.

Police reported two arrests after projectiles were launched and an officer suffered a knee injury.
