TORONTO - Police say an Ontario woman accused of hanging her dog after it was taken away by animal control officers has turned herself in to authorities.

Toronto police say 50-year-old Rita Mueller of Bolton is charged with killing or injuring an animal, causing or permitting unnecessary pain and disobeying a court order.

She was sought in the killing of a Shar-Pei at a Toronto Animal Services shelter this summer.

Police say the dog was removed from Mueller's care after it allegedly bit someone, and accuse her of hanging the dog with a leash while she was supposed to prepare the pet for a new owner.

They say she fled the scene before shelter staff noticed what had happened.

Mueller, whom police say runs a dog rescue, is due in court this morning.
