With the ringing of school bells announcing the start of a new school year, be aware that more traffic and more pedestrians are bound to be on metro’s roads.
It’s important for the safety of everyone that motorists be aware of the start of the school year and take steps to prevent accidents. Obey crosswalk guards and pay close attention to speed zones in school areas. Be vigilant in school areas, even during off-hours and watch for children crossing the street. Be cautious in school zones and drive accordingly.
School buses will be back on the road soon so it’s important to remember to stop for all school buses displaying flashing red lights. Motorists must stop in all directions and lanes when the red lights are flashing.
In some areas of HRM, failing to stop for school buses was a persistent problem in the last school year. Officers will be watching for vehicles failing to stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights and ticketing drivers who fail to comply.
Remember that failing to stop for a school bus or for someone crossing in a crosswalk is dangerous and could result in hefty fines.
Also in our schools, you will find Halifax Regional Police School Response Officers.
These officers work closely with parents, teachers and students to provide assistance and direction. School officers are familiar figures in our schools and help students with a variety of issues. School officers also respond to the Bully Hotline (call 490-SAVE or 490-7283 email bullyhotline@halifax.ca or text 233-SAVE ) and teach safety programs in the schools.
Most importantly, however, school officers foster positive relationships between police and children. They are often viewed as a safe, trusted person for students, teachers and parents to approach with concerns.
