MAT WHYNOTT POLITICAL SPEAK

One of my most treasured things about summer is the opportunities it presents for events in our beautiful province. Nothing beats walking along the waterfront on a warm sunny day or having a family picnic at one of the parks or lakes that make Nova Scotia so easy to enjoy this time of year.

Summer turns our province into a natural hub of energy and there are hundreds of community events from Yarmouth to North Sydney that embrace our culture, celebrate our achievements and bring us closer together as communities. Hammonds Plains - Upper Sackville isn't left off the list of bustling regions; we have our fair share of wing nights, community fairs, art exhibits and summer concerts.

Speaking of which, everyone's favorite classic rock concert, Weir Rockin', will be taking place this year on Saturday, Aug. 18 once again at Weir Field in Upper Sackville. Headliners this year are rockers Kim Mitchell, Prism & the newly reformed Platinum Blonde! Head over to www.weirrockin.ca for more information and to buy tickets.

Let us not forget about some of the larger events that are happening the summer. We just said goodbye to the Tall Ships Festival in Halifax, which ended on Monday, as the parade of boats head south to Lunenburg. This brings us almost straight into the ever-famous Halifax International Buskers Festival, which is always a great time for all ages, from Aug. 2 to 12. Acrobats, magicians, comedians, human statues and so much more will fill the Halifax Waterfront for the week long plus event which is surely not to be missed by me!

Finally, I'm excited to announce that I will be hosting an event of my own! Join me and Premier Darrell Dexter at my office at 1651 Sackville Dr. on Friday, Aug. 17 for my summer barbecue. Were firing up the grills at 4 p.m.; bring your friends, family, and appetite!

Before I leave, as we start to see backpacks showing up in our local store, reminding us that our kids will soon be heading to back to school, let's be proactive about this upcoming school year. Have a new principal? Now is the time to introduce yourself. Haven't checked your school bus route for the upcoming year? Now is the time to do it. Please contact me if you notice anything out of the ordinary, and as always, feel free to get in touch with my office at 864-5310 or mat.mla@ns.sympatico.ca with any questions or concerns you may have.
