To the editor:
In response to the March 4 letter to the editor by Alan Herscovici, executive vice-president of the Fur Council of Canada, I would like to say the following:
Dear sir, you say there a resolution was adopted not to use dog and cat fur/skin. Is there anywhere we could view this resolution?
You also say that animal activists have not been able to prove you do use dog and cat fur, yet it hasn't been proven that you do not.
Also, it is currently legal to import and sell dog and cat fur in Canada
There is currently no legal requirement that furs be labeled to indicate their animal source, or origin
This exists as a perverse loophole:
1. The Competition Act prevents mislabeling, but doesn't require labeling.
2. The Textile Labeling Act contains detailed labeling and advertising requirements imposed by Canada: but it does not apply unless the fiber "has been removed from an animal skin."
3. The Consumer Packaging and Labeling Act similarly contains labeling protections for consumers so they know about the content of the product they buy - but only if it is "prepackaged"- i.e. sealed.
So yes I maintain that dog and cat fur is being sold in Canada.
If there were none, can you tell me then why would the Canadian government refuses to ban its import? Thank you

Activists argue dog/cat fur sold in Canada too
