The 33rd SEDMHA Honda International Minor Hockey Tournament launches Thursday, April 1st across the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM).
Teams start arriving from Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia in the coming days to begin play in the largest minor hockey tournament in Eastern Canada.
The largest minor hockey tournament in Eastern Canada officially opens this Thursday at 7pm at the Dartmouth Sportsplex. Teams begin play Thursday afternoon at 1:30pm in 19 venues across the HRM. This year's event features 260 teams in 23 separate divisions including seven female divisions with 39 teams from Atom to Midget.
The tournament wraps up on with Championship games in all divisions on Sunday, April 4th. There will be 568 games played (a quarter of an NHL regular season) in a span of four days.
With an expectation of over 5,000 athletes and approximately 1,000 team officials, the tournament has a huge impact on the economic activity in the city. Hotel accommodations, food and entertainment make-up the economic activity generated by the tournament, which will exceed 15 million dollars to the city and provincial economy.
SEDMHA started in 1977 as an eight-team Bantam A tournament hosted by the former Shearwater East Dartmouth Minor Hockey Association. The current host association Dartmouth Whalers Minor Hockey, was formed in 1987 with the merging of SEDMHA and the Dartmouth Minor associations. Since then the tournament has continued to grow into the annual success it is today providing a fitting close to the minor hockey season.
