New case in rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes program

Another case was added to the province's Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program today, May 6.

The Department of Justice is offering a reward of up to $150,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of individuals responsible in the murder case of Rachel Joy MacQuarrie of Dartmouth.

On June 13,2002, skeletal remains were found by a construction worker who was on site twinning the 101 highway between Mount Uniacke and Windsor. The remains were later identified as those Rachel Joy MacQuarrie.

The investigation revealed that Ms. MacQuarrie was last seen on Sept. 25, 1997 in the Halifax area, and was reported missing on Oct. 8, 1997. Ms. MacQuarrie had been living on Victoria Road in Dartmouth at the time of her disappearance.

"I implore anyone with information related to the this homicide case to please come forward," said Justice Minister Ross Landry. "We want to see criminals brought to justice and help bring some closure to the family of the late Ms. MacQuarrie."

Those who come forward with information will be expected to provide their name and contact information. In addition, they may be called to testify in court. All calls to the Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program will be recorded.

The Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program was launched in October 2006 as another tool for law enforcement to use in solving crime. There are now 60 cases in the program.
