Celebrities wearing Bedford jewelry maker’s bling

BEDFORD
By Yvette d’Entremont – The Weekly News
You know you’re having a good day when a celebrity like Beyonce Knowles struts onstage wearing your custom made jewelry.
Ozlem Metinoglu-Ozgun thought she was dreaming last summer when the singer appeared onstage wearing earrings Ozgun had designed and given the singer backstage.
“I met Beyonce in Toronto at a show in August 2007 in her VIP room. We got a (VIP) pass and you can bring gifts if you like, so I brought jewelry of course,” Ozgun recalled. “I was wearing one of my pieces that I thought she’d love, and when she saw me she said ‘Wow! Oh my goodness! What is this?’”
When Ozgun handed Beyonce the four pieces she had created specifically for the singer, she was pleased to see the large pair of earrings she’d given Beyonce actually matched her outfit.
“We went to our seats and she came onstage a few minutes later wearing these earrings. She looked at me, smiled at me, and patted her earrings,” Ozgun said. “It was the best moment ever. She wore them on her world tour and on her live DVD.”
Actresses Alicia Silverstone and Sophia Miles have also worn Ozgun’s handmade designs, and Ellen Page’s mother donned Moda jewelry when she attended last year’s Oscars ceremony.
All the celebrity attention has thrust the small business owner from Bedford into the spotlight. Moda by Ozlem was recently named as a finalist for the Halifax Chamber of Commerce’s 2009 Halifax Business Awards. The company was shortlisted in the small business of the year category. Award winners will be announced on Jan. 29.
Ozgun’s creations can be found locally at All Dressed Up locations in Halifax and Bedford, and she attends the Halifax Farmer’s Market every Saturday with her products. Select boutiques in Calgary, Winnipeg, St. John, Ontario and British Columbia also carry Moda by Ozlem designs, with pieces ranging in price from $25 to $150.
“I’d like to (eventually) have chain boutiques in North America and I’d love to wholesale to the States one day,” she said.
“I want my jewelry to be worn by all the glamorous ladies around.”
Celebrities Ozgun would like to see wearing her pieces include Jennifer Lopez and Lauren Conrad. But despite the pleasure she gets from the celebrity attention, Ozgun said she’s still always thrilled when “ordinary” women choose to wear her creations.
“I see a lot of people in HRM are wearing my jewelry when I go to the gym or the grocery store, which makes me feel really good, happy and proud,” Ozgun said. “When I see my designs on people it’s a wonderful feeling knowing that they’re enjoying it. It’s the most amazing thing about this business.”
