When the Newell family went to Haiti last month the last thing they expected was an  earthquake. “But having lived through something like that, you will never forget, never,” said Heidi Newell in an interview from her Dartmouth home. “It felt like we were standing on a boat. The world was rocking beneath us.”

Windsor Junction community in mourning

When Joy Goudge parted ways with Julie Vials following their meeting last Wednesday, she had no idea it would be the last time she’d see her friend. Vials died in hospital less than four hours after the back of her blue Hyundai Accent was hit by a Via Rail passenger train sometime after 1 p.m. on Jan. 27. The accident occurred at 464 Windsor Junction Rd. next to Watson Lane. There are no warning signs or lighted signals at the private, unmarked cros­sing.

Province’s nurses deserve a safe workplace too

In 2007, the Nova Scotia government introduced Workplace Violence legislation. The public-sector unions worked with the government in the development of the legislation  and employers were given notice that this was an issue that would no longer be ignored. Why is it that four years later, as an employee of the IWK Health Centre, I am still struggling to convey the seriousness of this issue to management?
