Have you ever mentioned something in passing only to have it take on a life of its own? Sometimes, if it involves household repairs for example, the result makes you wish that you had kept your big mouth shut.

Nine-year-old James has asked a three-part science question: What part of a flame is the hottest? What colour flame is the hottest? What is hotter, a flame from a wood fire or a burning ember?

You have probably noticed that a candle flame is multicoloured: mostly blue at the bottom, then bright yellowish orange, then orange/ red at the top where there isn’t enough oxygen for perfect combustion.
