One disgruntled hockey fan in Swift Current took their opposition to the fact the Swift Current Broncos will be displaced from their home when the city hosts the Ford World Women's Curling Championship in 2010.
The event, which will be held in the iPlex on March 20-29, will bump the Broncos from the ice in favour of 12 of the world's best women's curling teams during an event which will put the city in the international spotlight as hosts of this prestigious event.
At Saturday's night's action at the iPlex, where a sold out crowd of 800 fans were watching the opening playoff round at the 2009 SaskPower Scotties Tournament of Hearts, and another 2,288 spectators were watching the Broncos host the Prince Albert Raiders, someone took the opportunity to get up on their soapbox and place the following note under a number of windshield wipers.
WHY DO WE HAVE TO MISS THE SPORT WE LOVE
WHY CANT THE CURLLERS PLAY AT FARVIEW. "O" WAIT. THERE ARE BROOMS IN THAT GAME AND WE HAVE A LADY MAYOR.
ONLY WITCHES RIDE BROOMS. THAT'S WHY WE HAVE TO MISS THE NEXT PLAY OFFS.
The note was certainly the buzz of the Power Patch following Saturday's entertaining curling action. It got under the windshields of a few members of the Saskatchewan Curling Association, who were watching the community put their best foot forward in hosting the provincial championships. It was also reportedly placed on some vehicles in the downtown core.
This isn't exactly the welcome back message the community is trying to convey to visitors. The message it does send is unless you are here for hockey, you are not welcome in the arena.
The Scotties, hosted over the past five days, have had a very real impact on restaurants, hotels, and certainly other businesses, along with giving the community exposure across the province. And, the Worlds will have a much larger impact and a ripple effect which many people might not be aware of. A ripple effect which the community can not even perceive.
Yes the community has a long standing love affair with the Broncos. The Broncos even took the opportunity on Saturday, when the other half of the iPlex was hosting the first playoff round at the Scotties, to honour the 13 individuals that helped bring the Western Hockey League back to the city in 1986.
Unfortunately, the actions of an individual to continue to fan the flames of this smouldering issue, and taking jabs at curling associations, organizers and fans, is not going to change the fact that Swift Current will be on the world stage in 2010.
Many would see hosting the Worlds a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but Swift Current has in the past, and will continue in the future, to take on bigger challenges and opportunities to put the community on the map.
The community should embrace this opportunity and think beyond the boundaries of simple inconvenience.

BLACK EYE FOR BRONCO FANS
I doubt the slanderous and misogynistic comments made by this over zealous fan would be condoned by the Bronco organization.
If his identity is found out, I would hope he would be banned from future bronco games. -

The author of this is obviously a mindless idiot.
The Bronco's might bring in a couple hundred thousand dollars if there playoffs are played at the I-Plex. The World Women will bring in 6-8 million dollars. Daahh -

Have to agree Dale, this person is an embarrassment to Broncos fans and residents of Swift Current alike! If the Scotties showed us anything it was that people around here love their curling and that Swift Current is a great place to host an event such as the World Championships.

I think the only message sent by a this note is that the author is a semi-literate, bigoted fool worthy of nothing more than scorn and ridicule.
Hosting the Ford World Women's Curling Championship in 2010 is an opportunity that comes along only rarely to a city the size of Swift Current. Congratulations again to the bid committee for successfully bringing this world class event to the Great Southwest!
