The Swift Current Colts were frozen out from the next round of playoffs in the Moose Jaw High School Football League after dropping an 11-6 decision to the visiting Estevan Elecs on Tuesday.
Neither team counted an offensive touchdown in a defensive battle where the teams combined for only 238 total yards. The arrival of winter changed the dynamics of the contest, with a windchill in the low teens and winds blowing at 50 kilometers per hour over a snow covered field.
Estevan counted their first win of the season by collecting all of their points on special teams. The Elecs were first on the scoreboard when Brody Shykulauis recovered a blocked punt in the endzone and the convert made it a 7-0 lead. Kicker Kyle Hovind was responsible for Estevan’s other four points, kicking a pair of 45 yard punt singles and one of his punts was mishandled by a Colts return team player and ends up as a two point safety.
Swift Current’s lone points came courtesy of their defence, with Tanner Hywick rumbling 50 yards with an interception return of a pass knocked into the air by the defensive line. The Colts missed a chance to tie the game just before the half, but their two-point convert attempt was stopped short.
Estevan carried an 8-6 lead into the second half, and the ensure the Colts would need to find the endzone after Swift Current conceded a safety early in the fourth quarter.
The Colts offence was slowed both by the weather and a tough Estevan defence. Colts quarterback Josh Siemens did not complete a pass in eight attempts, and Swift Current’s rushing attack was limited to 69 yards on 33 attempts.
Estevan was also unable to complete a pass, but Elecs running back Michael Bittman was clearly the most dominant player on the field with 130 yards rushing on 24 attempts. Estevan’s other back Justin Grimsound had 41 yards on nine carries.
Im sorry but i disagree, we are a well coached team, just very young. The majority of us are grade tens, myself included. I'm sure you have very little experience with the coaches so please don't judge what you don't know.
