Swift Current Bronco supporters are joining with hockey fans across North America in mourning the passing of Wade Belak.
Belak passed away at the age of 35 in Toronto on Wednesday, months after retiring from the National Hockey League following a 14-year professional career. He skated with the Colorado Avalanche, Calgary Flames, Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers and the Nashville Predators, accumulating 1,263 penalty minutes during 549 NHL games.
Belak skated in the Western Hockey League as a member of the Saskatoon Blades between 1992 and 1995.
"The WHL is shocked and saddened by this tragic news. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Belak family, friends and all of his former teammates," WHL Commissioner Ron Robison said in a statement yesterday.
He is the third NHL enforcer to pass away this hockey off-season, with hockey fans also mourning the loss of Derek Boogaard of the New York Rangers and Winnipeg Jets hopeful Rick Rypien.
